The Winter Seat: Legend of Omkareshwar Temple

When the harsh winters cover the high peaks in thick snow, the divine presence of Lord Shiva descends to the warmer valleys. Welcome to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath—the sacred winter home of Baba Kedarnath.

The Shifting of the Lord

Every year around November (Bhai Dooj / Diwali), the doors of Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar are closed. The deity's 'Utsav Doli' (palanquin) is brought down in a grand procession to Ukhimath. For the next six months, all worship and rituals for Kedarnath take place here in the Omkareshwar Temple.

The Ancient Legend

According to Hindu mythology, Ukhimath gets its name from Usha, the daughter of the demon king Banasur. It is believed that Usha and Aniruddha (the grandson of Lord Krishna) were married at this exact spot.

The temple is named 'Omkareshwar' because Emperor Mandhata performed a rigorous penance standing on one leg for 12 years here. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him in the form of 'Omkar' (the cosmic sound Om).

Why You Must Visit

Unlike the crowded summer months at Kedarnath, visiting Ukhimath during winters offers a deeply peaceful and meditative experience. You get to witness the ancient architecture and sit in silence with Mahadev.
